Remember when you could walk into a hardware store and be greeted by
your first name? When you could find everything you needed and qualified people who
cared about your project would give you advice? That’s how we do business.

Family-owned and operated, MAC’S Inc. is a North Dakota company that offers more than just standard hardware: from bolts in bulk and chain, rope, and cable to upholstery fabrics and surplus items, we carry the items you need for just about any project. It is often said that if you can’t find something, check at MAC’S: we say check here first! No matter what product you are looking for, we are committed to bringing you value in every purchase and sending you off with a smile and a handshake.

NOT Just Another Hardware Store

At MAC’S, we pride ourselves on being anything but typical: although we do carry a full line of the hardware and supplies you would expect, we also specialize in heavy duty items for industrial-sized projects, such as pallet racking and skid steer loader attachments. We are also your upholstery headquarters, with a large selection of upholstery fabrics, vinyl products, and poly foam of all types that can be cut to size while you shop. Our bargain barn section features an ever-changing assortment of unique and surplus items where we have sold everything from airline seats and exercise equipment to Humvee tops and road signs. Our product line-up may always offer something new, but some things never change at MAC’S: the popcorn, coffee, and great customer service are always free when you shop with us.

Company History

MAC’S Inc. is a 4th generation, family-owned company that was first incorporated in 1932. Originally in the manufacturing business, the business evolved into a retail venture in 1965 when Otto “Bud” McWethy opened the Surplus Center in Fargo, North Dakota. Bud opened several more surplus stores under that title, then launched the MAC’S name in 1975. MAC’S continued to grow over the next 20 years, with stores being established across the tri-state area in Fargo, Devils Lake, Jamestown, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Aberdeen, and Detroit Lakes. In 1996, MAC’S was handed over to Bud’s son, Charles “Chuck” McWethy, as work was being done to open an eighth retail location in Bismarck, North Dakota. Since taking over, Chuck has continued to expand the business, opening new locations in Moorhead, Huron, and Minot, and relocating four stores. In the summer of 2007, Chuck and his brother Mike opened the Old 52 General Store, a retail store in small-town Sabin, Minnesota, that specializes in nostalgic sodas, candy, and toys and offers locals a full line-up of groceries and hardware.

This spring, MAC’S celebrated the opening of its 11th hardware store in Minot, North Dakota, and the relocation of its Jamestown, North Dakota, store.
